Language in Sumatra

What languages are spoken in Sumatra?

Sumatra is an island in Indonesia. Therefore, Indonesian is also spoken in this region, but beyond that, there are many regional languages on the island.

Sumatra is essentially the birthplace of Indonesian, which is the root of Malay culture as the land of Malay civilization.

Ethnic groups with regional languages in Sumatra are:

1. Acehnese. Part of North Sumatra

2. Gayo. Part of northeastern Sumatra

3. Pakpak. Part of northwest Sumatra

4. Karo. Part of North Sumatra.

5. Batak. North Sumatra.

6. Malay. Almost all of Sumatra.

7. Minang. In West Sumatra.

8. Ogan, in South Sumatra.

9. Rejang, in southwest Sumatra.

10. Kerinci, in West Central Sumatra.

11. Lampung, in South Sumatra.

12. Nias, an island northwest of Sumatra.

13. Mentawai, an island in West Sumatra.

These are some of the regional languages in Sumatra, and there are several more spoken in smaller communities that I haven't mentioned here. This may seem confusing, but considering that Sumatra is the size of Germany, with a coastline of about 2,500 km, separated by massive mountains and vast, dense forests, it's understandable why this island has such rich cultural diversity.
